Quote of the day - Guess who?

"I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, and D. Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?"

I cheated and looked it up, so I'm disqualifying myself.

Somebody once posted on my blog:

"Conservative: I know who it is too but I don't have the same scruples as Mixter :-) "

So I guess I shouldn't have scruples either..

Spoilsport :-) Yep Barry Goldwater in 1964. It's amazing how sane the Republicans USED to be.

Actually, the quote is "As the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion..." and is part of the Treaty of Tripoli written by Joel Barlow (USA diplomat) and Hassan Bashaw (of Algers), late during George Washington's second term and later ratified by President John Adams.

My long rant on the secular nation of this nation here. Complete with pictures btw.. because I'm a full service blogger.. :)

You have to hand it to the fundis. They somehow made "The US was founded as a christian nation" conventional wisdom. If you try and reinforce the secular roots, you come off like you're attacking God.

If you ask 10 people on the street if "In God We Trust" has always been on our currency, I'll bet at least 9 would say yes. In fact, it wasn't until 1864 that it first appeared on a coin.

Money is a tool of commerce, has nothing to do with God, and it needs to be removed.
